Body Weight Outcomes and Food Expenditures Among Older Europeans: A simultaneous equation approach AgEcon
Drichoutis, Andreas C.; Lazaridis, Panagiotis; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
We analyze the inter-relationships between body weight outcomes and food expenditures among older Europeans using a simultaneous equation model. Several statistical tests were conducted to assess endogeneity of selected variables, the exogeneity, relevance, and validity of instruments used, and the identification of the model. Our results generally suggest, contrary to normative views, that food-away-from-home expenditure is negatively related to body mass index (BMI). BMI is negatively related to the percentage of food spent away from home.

CDSIMEQ: A program to implement two-stage probit least squares AgEcon
Keshk, Omar M.G..
The cdsimeq command implements the two-stage probit least squares estimation method described in Maddala (1983) for simultaneous equations models in which one of the endogenous variables is continuous and the other endogenous variable is dichotomous. The cdsimeq command implements all the necessary procedures for obtaining consistent estimates for the coefficients, as well as their corrected standard errors.

ENERGIA RENOVÁVEL: UMA ANÁLISE SOBRE OFERTA E DEMANDA DE ETANOL NO BRASIL AgEcon

INCOME DISTRIBUTIONAL IMPACTS OF TRADE POLICIES IN A MULTI-MARKET FRAMEWORK: A CASE IN PAKISTAN AgEcon
Hudson, Darren; Ethridge, Don E..
The impacts of using export taxes as a price control in a multi-market framework are explored using the cotton and yarn sectors in Pakistan as examples. Results show that the export tax on cotton increased domestic consumption and decreased exports of cotton in Pakistan, transferring income from cotton producers to yarn spinners and the government. There was a social loss to Pakistan in the cotton sector. The export tax on cotton increased domestic yarn production, consumption, exports, and incomes of yarn spinners, but resulted in a large transfer (social loss) out of the yarn sector.

Malaria and National Income: Examining a Two Way Causal Relationship AgEcon
Datta, Saurabh; Reimer, Jeffrey J..
Simple plots of data show that malaria has a negative correlation with national income per capita, whether looking across countries at a point in time, or looking at a single country over time. Some countries have been able to move from an equilibrium characterized by low income and high malaria, to a new equilibrium with higher income and lower rates of malaria. This study develops and estimates a simultaneous equations model to explain these changes. We distinguish three potential causal chains: (a) the ability for decreases in malaria to increase income, (b) the ability for increases in income to reduce malaria (reverse causality), and (c) external factors that may lead to both higher income and lower malaria (incidental association). We find that...

The Effect of Ethanol Production on the U.S. National Corn Price AgEcon
Park, Hwanil; Fortenbery, T. Randall.
A system of equations representing corn supply, feed demand, export demand, food, alcohol and industrial (FAI) demand, and corn price is estimated by three-stage least squares. A price dependent reduced form equation is then formed to investigate the effect of ethanol production on the national average corn price. The elasticity of corn price with respect to ethanol production is then obtained. Results suggest that ethanol production has a positive impact on the national corn price and that the demand from FAI has a greater impact on the corn price than other demand categories. Thus, significant growth in ethanol production is important in explaining corn price determination.

The Greek Unions of Agricultural Cooperatives as efficient enterprises AgEcon
Sergaki, Panagiota; Semos, Anastasios V..
This paper investigates the efficiency level of Unions of Agricultural Cooperatives (UAC) and Investor-Oriented Firms (IOF) in Greece. Data have been collected over a period of six years for UAC (1995-2000) and of five years for IOF (1995-1999). Financial analysis results were used with the help of 3SLS technique in a four equation simultaneous model in order to estimate those parameters, which would determine the efficiency level of the UAC and the IOF in Greece.

The Impact of Catfish Imports on the U.S. Wholesale and Farm Sectors AgEcon
Muhammad, Andrew; Neal, Sammy J.; Hanson, Terrill R.; Jones, Keithly G..
The primary objective of this study was to assess the impact of catfish imports and tariffs on the U.S. catfish industry, with particular focus on the U.S. International Trade Commission ruling on Vietnam in 2003. Given the importance of Vietnam to the U.S. catfish market, it was assumed that catfish import prices would increase by 35 percent if the maximum tariff was imposed on catfish from Vietnam. With the tariff, domestic catfish prices at the wholesale level would increase by $0.06 per lb, and farm prices by $0.03 per lb. Processor sales would increase by 1.66 percent. Total welfare at the wholesale level would increase from $69.2 million to $71.7 million, an increase of about 3.63 percent, and processor and farm revenue would increase by 4.4 percent...
